Suspended Duality

Cut one end of the rope the other end will fall. While this statement serves as a warning to my audiences not to do what seems so tempting, it also connotes the principle concepts that drive me into creating this series of works. The materials that I use in this series of works are mass-produced merchandizes that I found in dump sites and cut-down tree stumps that I collected from highway constructions. The awkward hybridism displayed in each object is the reflection of the inevitably paradoxical relationship between human being and the nature.

All these fourteen pieces of odd-looking objects are paired-up and respectively connected by a similarly odd-looking piece of rope. Each pair is displayed in a suspended mode wherein the fact is that whether or not they both can remain in the air depend on the existence of each other.

The underlying connotations of coexistence, balance and reciprocation are realms that I attempt to explore.

I sometimes wonder that where should I take stance, as an active practitioner of consumerism, when crossing interest with our mother nature. I see valuable objects considered useless and being abandoned in the dump sites nearby my home everyday. I see handsome trees being cut down just to make room for a wider highway to cope with our ever expanding traffic demand. I see beautiful harbor being ruined "for the citizen's own good". Haven't we another alternative other than seeing nature as our counterpart, and worst of all continuously exploiting her? Are we truly benefited by this dualistic mentality?

Are these suspended objects dualistic or they are mingling to make a harmonious whole?
